In a tropical climate, the cheapest cooling is the heat you stop before it reaches the glass. Aluminium louvres and brise-soleil do exactly that: they shade the façade, cut solar heat gain, and — where they are designed to open — move air through the building. Used well, they lower the cooling load on an air-conditioned building and make a naturally ventilated one liveable. Used as decoration only, they are a missed opportunity.

Two Different Jobs: Ventilation and Sun-Shading
The word “louvre” covers two distinct functions, and confusing them is the most common design error:
- Ventilation louvres are sized to move a volume of air — into a plant room, a stairwell, a generator enclosure, or across a naturally ventilated space. The free area between the blades is the number that matters.
- Sun-shading (brise-soleil) is sized to block the sun off the glass at the times of day it strikes hardest. Here the blade depth, spacing and angle are set to geometry, not airflow.
A single screen can do both, but only if it is designed to. We decide which job each element does before we fix a blade.
Fixed Blade vs Operable Louvres

Operable Louvres
Blades that pivot — manually or motor-driven — so ventilation and shading can be adjusted to the weather and time of day. Used where a space needs controllable airflow, or where the shading requirement changes through the day. More capable, more maintenance.
Weather (Drainage) Louvres
Blades profiled specifically to admit air while shedding driving rain — essential on ventilation openings into plant rooms and enclosures on exposed elevations.
Reading the Accra Sun
Sun-shading is geometry. On Ghana’s latitude the sun is high overhead for much of the day, so:
- Horizontal blades over a window shade the high midday and overhead sun effectively, which makes them the workhorse of brise-soleil here.
- Vertical fins handle the lower morning and late-afternoon sun on east- and west-facing elevations, where horizontal blades alone let the low sun under them.
- Blade depth and spacing are set together — deeper or closer blades shade more but cut more daylight and view, so the balance is tuned to the room behind the glass.
We set blade angle and spacing to the orientation of each elevation, not to a single off-the-shelf pattern.
Why It Pays in Ghana
- Lower cooling load — shading the glass before the sun reaches it cuts the heat an air-conditioning system has to remove.
- Comfort without glare — daylight is kept while direct beam and glare are controlled.
- Durable in the climate — aluminium does not rot, rust or warp, and a powder-coated or anodised finish holds up in sun, humidity and coastal salt air.
- Architectural register — a well-designed brise-soleil gives a building a deliberate, engineered face rather than a flat curtain of glass.

Do louvres really reduce cooling costs in Ghana? Yes — shading the glass before the sun hits it is the most effective single step, because it stops heat at the façade rather than removing it afterwards with air-conditioning. The saving depends on orientation, glass area and blade design, which is why we set the shading to the elevation.
