Choosing an Aluminium Installer in Accra

What to ask before you hire an aluminium installer in Accra — execution standards (EN 1090), proof of performance testing, the workmanship warranty, and the red flags that separate a fabricator from a fitter.

How to Choose an Aluminium Installer in Accra

Accra’s aluminium market is full of people who will sell you a frame. Far fewer will specify a system to your elevation, fabricate it to tolerance, install it plumb and anchored, and stand behind the work in writing. The difference does not show up on the quote — it shows up in the first hard rainy-season storm. This guide gives you the questions to ask so you hire the second kind of installer, not the first.

Aluminium Installers Ghana has fabricated and installed aluminium across Ghana since 1988, and the questions below are exactly the ones we would want a client to ask us.

Question 1: “To What Standard Do You Execute the Work?”

A serious installer will name a real execution standard. For aluminium structures that is EN 1090 (EN 1090-3 covers aluminium), which governs how the fabrication and fixing are actually carried out and to what Execution Class. An installer who cannot name any standard at all is fitting frames, not executing engineered work.

Ask, too, how window performance is verified. The real measures are:

  • ASTM E283 — air leakage
  • ASTM E331 — water penetration under static pressure
  • ASTM E330 — structural/wind load
  • AAMA 501 — methods for testing installed curtain wall and storefront performance

You are not expected to run these tests yourself — but an installer who has never heard of them is a warning sign.

Question 2: “Will You Survey Before You Quote?”

A real specification follows a survey. An installer who quotes a fixed per-window price over the phone, before seeing the openings, is guessing — and a guess is padded on the easy jobs and short on the hard ones. The honest answer for installed work is “on survey,” because the opening size, glazing, wind exposure and access decide the figure. A willingness to survey first is a sign of an installer who quotes what the job needs, not a headline number.

Question 3: “What Warranty Do You Give, and On What?”

There are two different things called “warranty,” and you should separate them:

  • A material/system warranty comes from the profile or glass supplier.
  • A workmanship warranty is the installer’s own commercial guarantee on the installation — the part most leaks actually come from.

Aluminium Installers Ghana gives a decade-long workmanship warranty: our own commercial guarantee on the install, not an industry test standard. Ask any installer to put their workmanship warranty in writing. If they will not, they do not expect the install to hold.

Question 4: “Do You Fabricate, or Only Fit?”

A fabricator controls the profile cut, the corner cleats, the gaskets and the drainage slots — the details that decide whether a window seals and drains. A fitter who only assembles bought-in units has less control over those details. Ask where the fabrication happens and who controls tolerance. (Our own Specialty Fabrication and CNC & Laser Aluminium capability is why we can hold tolerance rather than hope for it.)

Question 5: “How Will You Anchor and Seal the Perimeter?”

Most window leaks come from a bad install around a good window: a frame set out of plumb, under-anchored, or sealed badly. A competent installer will talk readily about mechanical anchoring back to the structure and a properly weatherproofed perimeter seal. Vagueness here is the single biggest red flag, because it is the single biggest cause of failure.

The Red Flags — A Quick Checklist

  • Quotes a fixed installed price without seeing the openings
  • Cannot name any execution or performance standard
  • Will not put a workmanship warranty in writing
  • Talks only about the frame, never the anchoring and sealing
  • Pushes “cheapest” rather than asking what the elevation has to do

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I just pick the lowest quote? No — pick the most honest one. A lower-priced quote that omits the glazing decision, the anchoring and the weather-sealing is not actually cheaper; it is a deferred leak. Compare what is specified, not just the bottom line.

What’s the single most important question to ask? “How will you anchor and seal the window into the opening?” Most failures are install failures, not product failures, so the answer to this question tells you most of what you need to know.

Is EN 1090 really relevant for a house in Accra? It is the recognised execution standard for aluminium structural work, and an installer who works to it brings that discipline to residential jobs too. You may not need a formal Execution Class certificate on a small house, but you do want an installer who knows what one is.

How do I check an installer’s track record? Ask for installed references you can see, and ask how long they have been fabricating and installing. A long record across residential and commercial work in Ghana’s climate is itself a form of evidence.
