They are easy to maintain, give a clear traditional or contemporary line depending on the profile, and suit staircases and balconies where glass is not wanted. Spacing matters here — bars are set close enough that the barrier is safe for children.
Combination
Many homes mix the two — glass to the terrace where the view matters, vertical bars to the service stair where durability matters. We specify the infill to the location, not to a single house-wide rule.
The Part Nobody Sees: The Fixings
Here is the honest truth about balustrades: the part that decides whether it is safe is the part you never look at. A balustrade is only as strong as the way its posts are anchored to the structure. A beautiful glass balustrade fixed into weak substrate or with under-specified anchors is a hazard, not a feature.
