Anodised vs Powder-Coated Aluminium Finishes — Which One for Ghana?
The Question Behind the Question
When a client asks “anodised or powder-coated?”, they are usually asking something more practical: which finish will still look right in ten years on an Accra elevation, and which one survives a knock without becoming a permanent eyesore. Both are good finishes. Neither is a paint job sprayed on a frame in a yard. But they protect aluminium in fundamentally different ways, and the right answer depends on the elevation, the colour you want, and how exposed the surface is to coastal salt and harmattan dust. What Each Finish Actually Is
The two finishes are not two brands of the same thing — they are two different chemistries.
Anodising
Anodising is an electro-chemical process that grows a hard oxide layer out of the aluminium itself. It is not a coating sitting on top of the metal; it is part of the metal. That gives anodising its signature properties: it cannot peel or flake because there is nothing to peel, and it keeps the natural metallic look of aluminium — champagne, bronze, black and natural silver tones. The trade-off is colour range. Anodising lives in the metallic family; it does not give you a bright RAL red or a flat brilliant white.
Powder Coating
Powder coating is a dry polymer powder applied electrostatically and then cured in an oven so it flows into a continuous, even film bonded to the surface. Its great strength is colour: any RAL shade, matte or gloss, textured or smooth, consistent across a whole facade. The trade-off is that it is a coating — a very good one when applied to a properly pre-treated surface, but a coating nonetheless, which means it can be chipped, and a deep gouge exposes the aluminium beneath.
How They Weather in the Ghana Climate
This is where the showroom answer and the real answer diverge.
On a sheltered inland elevation in Kumasi or East Legon, both finishes will perform for many years. The decision there is mostly aesthetic. The picture changes near the coast. Salt-laden air along the Accra, Tema and Takoradi corridor is aggressive, and harmattan dust is abrasive. A quality architectural powder coat with correct pre-treatment handles this well, but a thin or poorly pre-treated coat will chalk and fade. Anodising, being integral to the metal, is exceptionally stable against UV and does not fade — though a thin anodic layer on a heavily exposed surface can dull over time.
The honest summary: finish quality and pre-treatment matter more than which of the two you pick. A cheap version of either fails. A specification-grade version of either lasts.
Repairability — The Point Nobody Mentions
If a powder-coated panel is scratched on site, the scratch can often be touched in, though a perfect colour match is difficult and a large damaged panel is usually replaced. If an anodised panel is scratched, there is no field repair — the oxide layer cannot be re-grown on site, so a damaged anodised component is replaced. For a balustrade in a busy commercial lobby that will take trolley knocks, this is a real consideration we raise before the order goes in.
So Which One — A Straight Recommendation
- Want a specific brand colour, a bright or flat tone, matched across a large facade? Powder coating, RAL-specified, on a properly pre-treated surface.
- Want the natural metallic look, maximum fade-stability, and a finish that physically cannot peel? Anodising, in the metallic range.
- Heavily exposed coastal elevation? Either works at specification grade — but insist on the pre-treatment and coat thickness, because that, not the brand of finish, decides the lifespan.

What It Costs to Get Right
Neither finish is the place to economise. A specification-grade anodised or powder-coated finish costs more than a thin yard coat, and it is worth it, because re-finishing an installed facade is far more expensive than specifying the right finish once. We never quote the lowest number; we quote the finish the elevation honestly needs, and we tell you plainly when a sheltered interior allows a lighter specification and when a coastal facade does not.
