The Problem with Sun on Glass
In Accra, the sun does most of its damage before you even feel it. It lands on the glass of an unshaded elevation, passes straight through, and turns the room behind into an oven the air-conditioning then has to fight all afternoon. You can feel it in any glazed office on Ridge or in Airport City at 2pm: the AC is running hard, the bill is climbing, and the room is still warm by the window.
The most effective answer is not a bigger air-conditioner. It is to stop the sun before it reaches the glass — and that is exactly what an aluminium louvre does.
How Shading Beats Cooling
There is a simple principle behind sun-shading: it is far cheaper to keep heat out than to remove it once it is in. A louvre or brise-soleil is a set of angled aluminium blades fixed in front of (or as part of) the elevation. The blades are angled to block the high, hot overhead sun while still letting in daylight and the view. The heat is intercepted outside the glass, so it never becomes the air-conditioning’s problem.
That has two honest benefits:
- Lower cooling load — the AC works less hard, which shows up on the running cost over a year.
- Less glare — the harsh direct sun is broken up, so the room is comfortable to work and live in.
Fixed Blade vs Operable
There are two broad families, and the right one follows the elevation.
Fixed-Blade Brise-Soleil
The blades are set at a permanent angle, calculated for the orientation of the wall. This is the workhorse for commercial elevations — a clean architectural shading screen with no moving parts to maintain. The fixed-blade louvre across the front of a building on Ridge does its job every day without anyone touching it.
Ventilation Louvres
Where the job is airflow rather than only shading — plant rooms, generator enclosures, car-park ventilation, service risers — louvres let air move while keeping rain and birds out. These are specified to the free-area the mechanical engineer needs, not chosen by looks.
Reading the Elevation First
Louvres are not decoration bolted on at the end. The blade angle, depth and spacing depend on which way the wall faces and how high the sun gets there. A west-facing elevation taking the brutal late-afternoon sun needs a different blade geometry from a north face. We read the orientation first, then set out the blades to the sun the wall actually receives.
This is the same discipline we bring to every aluminium job: specify to what the elevation has to do, then fabricate and install to a real standard. Louvre and brise-soleil assemblies are fabricated and installed to EN 1090 (the execution standard for aluminium structures), so the screen is engineered, not just hung.

Louvres Work Best With the Whole Envelope
Shading is most powerful when it is specified alongside the glazing it protects. A louvre will not turn off your air-conditioning. What it does is take a real bite out of the solar heat the AC has to fight, and tame the glare that makes a glazed room uncomfortable.
