Buying Aluminium Windows & Doors in Ghana — What Actually Matters
An aluminium window is not a single product off a shelf. It is a system — the frame profile, the glass, the gaskets, the hardware, and the way the whole thing is anchored and sealed into the opening. Two windows can use the same profile and perform completely differently, because the glazing and, above all, the install decide whether wind and driving rain stop at the frame or get behind it. This guide walks a Ghanaian buyer — homeowner, developer, or facilities manager — through the decisions that matter before money changes hands.

Step One: Read the Opening, Not the Catalogue
Before you choose a window type, read what the opening has to do:
- Wind exposure — a high-rise elevation in Airport City or a coastal opening in Takoradi sees far higher wind load than a sheltered inner courtyard.
- Driving-rain exposure — west- and south-facing elevations take the worst of the rainy-season squalls.
- Air-conditioning — a cooled room behaves differently from a naturally ventilated one, and that changes whether a thermal break earns its cost.
- Use — bedroom, bathroom, shopfront, and stairwell each want a different opening action.
The opening writes the specification. The catalogue only offers options.
Step Two: Choose the Opening Action
Casement Windows
Side-hinged, opening outward, compressing against the seal. The strongest weather-tightness for exposed, high-wind, driving-rain elevations. The sensible default where keeping a storm out matters most.
Sliding Windows & Doors
Horizontally sliding sashes on tracks — space-saving, easy to operate, and well suited to apartments, balconies and shopfronts. Available as two-track, three-track and large sliding-door (patio) configurations.
Tilt-Turn Windows
A single handle gives two actions: tilt-in at the top for secure background ventilation, or full inward swing for cleaning and egress. The premium choice for commercial, hospitality and high-end residential work.

Step Three: Decide on a Thermal Break
A thermal-break frame has a non-conductive polyamide barrier set between the inner and outer aluminium, so heat and condensation do not pass straight through the metal. In Ghana it earns its cost on air-conditioned commercial, hospitality and healthcare buildings, where it cuts heat gain and the condensation that forms on a cold un-broken frame. For a simple, naturally ventilated room a standard frame is often perfectly adequate. The honest rule: specify the frame to the building, not to a brochure claim.
Step Four: Choose the Glazing
- Single glazing — a lower-priced, sound entry point for unconditioned rooms.
- Double glazing (IGU) — two panes with a sealed cavity, for thermal and acoustic comfort in cooled or noise-exposed rooms.
- Laminated / toughened glass — where safety, security or impact resistance is required.
Glazing is chosen alongside the frame, never as an afterthought — it is half of what the window does.
Step Five: Confirm the Finish
- Mill — bare aluminium, lowest-priced, rarely specified on finished work.
- Anodised — an electro-chemical finish, durable and clean in silver or champagne tones.
- Powder-coated — a baked RAL-colour finish, the usual choice for matching a building’s palette and holding up in Ghana’s sun and humidity.

How Performance Is Actually Measured
A good window is a tested window. The real standards are:
- ASTM E283 — air leakage (infiltration)
- ASTM E331 — water penetration under static air-pressure difference
- ASTM E330 — structural performance under positive and negative wind load
- EN 1090 — execution of aluminium structures (EN 1090-3 covers aluminium), so the fabrication and fixing are to a real engineering standard
Most leaks come from a bad install around a good window, not from the window itself — which is why anchoring and perimeter sealing matter as much as the profile.
What It Costs
Loose aluminium window units have been listed from around GH₵100 on the Ghana classifieds market as an indicative entry point, but that figure is for a bare unit only. A specified, fabricated and installed window — with the right glazing, a thermal break where needed, anchoring and weather-sealing — is quoted on survey, because the opening size, the glass, the wind exposure and the access decide the figure far more than the bare frame. Frequently Asked Questions
Are aluminium windows good for Ghana’s climate? Yes — aluminium does not rot, warp or rust like timber or steel, it carries large panes of glass in slim sightlines, and with the right finish it stands up to sun, humidity and coastal salt air. The system has to be specified and installed correctly, which is where most failures actually originate.
Do I need double glazing in Ghana? Not always. Double glazing earns its cost on air-conditioned rooms (less heat gain, lower cooling load) and on noise-exposed elevations. A naturally ventilated room is often well served by single glazing. We specify the glass to the room.
Casement or sliding — which is better? Neither is universally better. A casement seals tightest against wind-driven rain and suits exposed elevations; a sliding window saves space and operates easily in apartments and shopfronts. The right answer follows the opening.
Why is the installed price on survey and not a fixed number? Because the opening decides it — size, glazing, system, finish, wind exposure and access all move the figure. A fixed number quoted before survey would either pad the easy jobs or under-quote the hard ones. We measure first, then quote honestly.
