Sliding vs Casement Aluminium Windows: Which Is Right for Your Ghana Home?
Two Good Windows, Two Different Jobs
Clients often arrive having already decided they want “sliding windows” — usually because a neighbour or an apartment block has them, and they look clean and modern. Sometimes that is the right call. Sometimes the elevation is asking for a casement and nobody told them. Both are excellent aluminium windows; they simply do different jobs, and the right choice follows the room and the weather it faces.

How Each One Works
The Casement
A casement opens outward on side hinges, like a door. When it closes, the sash compresses against the seal around the whole perimeter. That compression is the key: it is what gives a casement its strong resistance to wind-driven rain.
The Sliding Window
A sliding window runs horizontally on tracks, one sash passing the other. Nothing swings out into the room or the balcony, which is why sliders are the default in apartments, shopfronts and tight balconies. They are space-saving and easy to operate.
Weather-Tightness: The Honest Difference
This is where the two genuinely differ, and it is the most important thing to understand for a Ghana elevation that faces the rains.
Because a casement compresses onto its seal, it is the stronger performer against driving rain on an exposed elevation. A sliding window seals well, but it seals along a track rather than by compression, so on the most weather-exposed, high-wind elevations the casement has the edge.
That does not make sliders “leaky.” A properly specified and installed slider on a sheltered or moderate elevation performs perfectly well. It means that on a coastal or high-rise face taking the full force of a storm, we will usually steer you toward a casement — or a higher performance class of slider with the glass and seals rated to suit. Both are measured against the same real standards: air infiltration to ASTM E283, water penetration to ASTM E331, and wind load to ASTM E330.
Space and Use
Where a Casement Wins
- It gives the fullest opening for ventilation and cleaning.
- It seals tightest on exposed elevations.
Where a Casement Costs You
- It swings outward, so it needs clear space outside — awkward over a walkway, a balcony edge or a planted bed.
Where a Sliding Window Wins
- Nothing protrudes, so it suits apartments, balconies and shopfronts.
- It is easy to operate and forgiving in tight rooms.
- It scales up to large sliding-door (patio) configurations for living-room openings onto a terrace.
Where a Sliding Window Costs You
- Only half the opening ventilates at once (one sash slides behind the other).
A Room-by-Room Rule of Thumb
Here is how we tend to advise, knowing every project is confirmed on survey:
- Bedrooms and living rooms on exposed elevations — casement, for weather-tightness and full ventilation.
- Apartments, balconies and tight spaces — sliding, because nothing swings out.
- Living-room-to-terrace openings — large sliding patio doors.
- Shopfronts and retail — sliding, for clean lines and easy operation.
- Coastal and high-rise faces — casement, or a high-performance slider specified to the wind class.
What About Cost?
Neither type is universally “the cheaper one” — the glass, the size, the performance class and the finish move the figure far more than the opening action does. A small single-glazed casement can cost less than a large double-glazed slider, and vice versa.
