A laser-cut aluminium screen is one of the few architectural elements that earns its place three ways at once. It throws shade across a hot west-facing Airport City elevation, it gives privacy to a balcony or a stairwell without bricking it up, and it gives the building a signature pattern that reads from the street. The mashrabiya tradition — the perforated screen that has shaded and ventilated buildings in hot climates for centuries — translates beautifully into precision-cut aluminium, and it suits the Ghana climate far better than a solid wall or an exposed pane of glass. From Design to Cut Path

The pattern — geometric, organic, a brand motif, or a traditional mashrabiya lattice — is drawn as a vector file. That file becomes the cut path for the machine. We cut aluminium two ways depending on the panel: CNC routing for thicker plate and crisp internal corners, and laser cutting for fine, intricate perforation in sheet. Both give a clean, repeatable edge across every panel, so a facade of forty screens reads as one consistent design rather than forty hand-made approximations. The Open-Area Ratio

The single most important number on a screen is its open-area ratio — the proportion of the panel that is cut away. A low open area (say a dense lattice) gives strong shade and privacy but cuts airflow and view; a high open area gives light, view and breeze but less shade and less privacy. There is no single correct figure — it is a design decision matched to what the screen is for. A west-facing afternoon-sun elevation wants a denser pattern; a screen meant mostly for decorative rhythm can be far more open. We set the open-area ratio to the job, and we show it to you before cutting.

The Part Nobody Sees — Keeping It Structural

A beautiful screen that buckles in the first storm has failed, and this is where decorative metalwork is most often done badly. The more you cut away, the more you weaken the panel — so a high open-area screen on an exposed elevation needs the pattern, the sheet thickness and the fixing frame engineered together. We assess the wind load on the elevation, size the panel and its sub-frame to carry it, and detail the fixings so the screen stays flat and silent in a hard Accra storm. Where a screen forms part of a larger building envelope, we coordinate it with the surrounding commercial cladding so the screens and the solid panels share a consistent fixing logic.

For panels exposed to wind, we hold the same structural discipline used on facade work — wind-load performance to ASTM E330 where the screen is part of a performance envelope — rather than treating a decorative panel as if it were only decorative.

Finish — Because the Screen Is the Facade

A screen is seen close up and at a distance, so the finish matters as much as the pattern. Anodised tones suit a natural metallic architectural look; powder coating in a specified RAL colour suits a screen that is meant to carry a brand colour or contrast with the wall behind it. On coastal elevations we specify the finish and pre-treatment for the salt exposure, because a screen that fades or chalks ruins the very pattern it was cut to show.

A precision-cut screen is a fabricated architectural element, not a stock product, so it is quoted on the design. We never quote the lowest number; we quote a screen that is both beautiful and structurally honest, and we tell you plainly where a denser or lighter pattern would serve you better.
